RTD4 vs. MPVI4: Which HP Tuners Device is Better for Your UTV?
If you’re running a modern UTV, whether it’s a Polaris RZR Pro R, a Turbo R, or a Can-Am Maverick R, you’ve likely realized that the days of simple "plug-and-play" chips are long gone. Today’s machines are rolling computers. To squeeze every ounce of horsepower out of these powerplants, you need professional-grade hardware to talk to the ECU.
Enter HP Tuners. They are the gold standard for EFI calibration, and their latest hardware lineup, the RTD4 and the MPVI4, is changing the game for the powersports industry. But here’s the problem: when you’re staring at two black boxes that look nearly identical, how do you know which one belongs in your tool kit?
At Pandemyk Performance, we live and breathe these devices. We’ve logged thousands of miles testing tunes and hardware so you don’t have to guess. Whether you’re a weekend warrior who just wants a reliable bump in power or a hardcore racer who needs to data log every pass, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s break down the RTD4 versus the MPVI4 to see which one is the right "prescription" for your machine’s performance.
The RTD4: Remote Tune Delivery Simplified
The RTD4 (Remote Tune Delivery) is designed with one goal in mind: simplicity. If you aren’t interested in becoming a professional calibrator and just want the best performance possible without the headache, this is your device.
Think of the RTD4 as a bridge. It bridges the gap between your UTV and our tuning experts at Pandemyk. It allows you to read your stock file and write our custom-calibrated tunes to your vehicle using nothing more than your smartphone.
Why the RTD4 Rules for the Average Rider
The RTD4 works seamlessly with the HP Tuners TDN (Tune Delivery Network) app, available on iOS and Android. This means you don’t even need a laptop to get your machine screaming. You plug the device into your OBDII or factory diagnostic port, sync it to your phone via Bluetooth, and follow the prompts.
- No "Tinkering" Required: You can’t accidentally change a timing table or mess with fueling. You simply upload the file we send you.
- Mobile Diagnostics: You can read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) right from your phone. If you go into limp mode in the dunes, you can see why immediately.
- Data Logging: You can still record data logs of how your engine is performing and send them directly to us through the app. This allows us to fine-tune your setup remotely.
If you’re looking to get our Pandemyk Performance Pro R Tune and want the easiest installation process possible, the RTD4 is the winner.

The MPVI4: The Power User’s Multi-Tool
Then there’s the MPVI4. This is the successor to the legendary MPVI2+ and MPVI3, and it is the standard by which all other tuning interfaces are measured. While the RTD4 is a "read and write" device, the MPVI4 is a full-blown "edit, scan, and calibrate" suite.
The MPVI4 gives you access to the VCM Suite Beta software. This is the same professional software we use in the shop to build our world-class tunes.
Who is the MPVI4 for?
- The Prosumer: You like to see exactly what’s happening under the hood. You want to open VCM Editor, look at your spark maps, and maybe tweak your fan trigger temperatures yourself.
- The Shop Owner: If you’re a dealer or a shop that tunes multiple vehicles, the MPVI4 is non-negotiable. It allows you to manage multiple licenses and vehicles from a single laptop.
- The Data Junkie: The MPVI4 offers high-speed data logging that is incredibly detailed. If you’re chasing a record at the drag strip or prepping for a BITD race, you need the resolution this device provides.
The MPVI4 is built for those who want total control. It’s also built to grow with you. If you start with a Polaris and later move to a high-performance truck or car, the MPVI4 likely supports those vehicles too.

Key Differences: Side-by-Side
To help you decide, let’s look at the cold, hard facts.
| Feature | RTD4 | MPVI4 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Use | Remote Tuning / End-User | Custom Calibration / Professional |
| Software Access | TDN App (Mobile) Only | VCM Suite (Laptop/PC) & Phone TDN App |
| Tuning Capability | Write Tunes from Pros | Edit & Write Your Own Tunes |
| Data Logging | Yes (Mobile/Cloud) | Yes (High-speed Laptop) |
| Bluetooth 5.0 | Yes | Yes |
| Expansion Port | Yes (Pro Link+ Compatible) | Yes (Pro Link+ Compatible) |
For most of our customers, the RTD4 provides everything they need. However, if you have a history of "tinkering" or you want to dive deep into the technical side of UTV tuning, the MPVI4 is the only way to fly.
The Credit System: How Tuning Costs Work
One thing both devices share is the Credit System. HP Tuners uses "Universal Credits" as a currency to license your vehicle’s ECU.
When you buy a device, it usually comes with zero credits unless you buy a bundle. To "flash" or write a tune to your Polaris or Can-Am, you must purchase a specific number of credits (usually 4 for modern MG1 ECUs). Once those credits are applied to your VIN, that vehicle is licensed for life. You can flash it 100 times, and it won't cost you another dime.
At Pandemyk Performance, we can help you navigate the credit system so you aren't buying more than you need. You can check out our HP Tuners Guides for a deeper dive into the licensing process.

Why Pandemyk Performance?
Choosing the device is only half the battle. The hardware is just the syringe; the tune is the medicine. You want the best prescription for your engine to ensure it stays healthy while making maximum power.
We specialize in high-performance UTV setups. From trail riders to professional racers, we provide tunes that are tested in the harshest conditions. We don't just "turn up the boost." We optimize fueling, timing, torque limits, and cooling fan cycles to ensure your machine runs better than it did the day it left the showroom floor.
Whether you choose the RTD4 for its simplicity or the MPVI4 for its power, we can provide the custom tuning files you need to get the job done. If you're a shop looking to offer these services to your own customers, check out our dealer applications to join the Pandemyk network.
The MG1 Factor: A Note on New Models
If you’re running a newer Polaris (like the 2024+ RZR XP 1000 or Ranger 1500), your ECU is likely an MG1. These ECUs are "locked" from the factory. Before either the RTD4 or MPVI4 can work their magic, the ECU has to be unlocked.
This is a service we provide. You send us your ECU, we perform the unlock, and send it back. Once that’s done, you’re free to use your HP Tuners device to load our custom Pandemyk tunes. It’s a seamless process that we’ve perfected to minimize your downtime.

Final Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?
It really comes down to how you plan to use it.
Buy the RTD4 if:
- You want a simple, phone-based experience.
- You trust the pros (us) to handle the calibration.
- You want to save a little bit of money on the hardware.
- You want the smallest, most portable device for your glove box.
Buy the MPVI4 if:
- You plan on learning how to tune yourself.
- You need to tune multiple different vehicles.
- You want to use a laptop for high-speed data logging.
- You want the "Pro Link+" features to log external sensors (like wideband O2).
Regardless of your choice, the performance "infection" starts here. Both devices are incredible pieces of technology that will unlock the hidden potential of your UTV.
